By Laurie MacDonald, PSAR REALTOR®, and YPN Chairperson

I love PSAR’s Young Professional Network (YPN) group. PSAR has an outstanding YPN group, and I’m privileged to serve this year as the 2018 committee chairperson.

In case you’re not familiar with YPN, let me explain that YPN is a group of PSAR members who work together with a purpose. We focus on learning and growing together. We share and discover new ideas together. It’s a peer networking opportunity unlike any other because we engage, educate and elevate.

YPN is a dynamic entry point for real estate professionals striving to become more successful in their careers and gain leadership experience. It’s a platform for REALTORS® to volunteer, network and learn more about the real estate industry, as well as fundraise and make a positive difference in our communities. By belonging to a network of peers who face similar issues, we like to bounce ideas off each another and provide support to each other.

At YPN, we focus on connecting and engaging the next generation of REALTORS® with the tools and encouragement they need to succeed. We facilitate opportunities for leadership through education, networking, events, technology and social media, and professional development. It’s about collaboration and working together.

YPN members are committed to working together to increase business and leadership opportunities and foster relationships for the future. Among our goals is to build business networks and community, share resources and experiences, develop professionally through educational opportunities, contribute to economic development and leverage influence in the real estate industry’s future.

YPN members are dedicated men and women who want to be involved in helping our Association, our community and grow professionally. YPN members seize the responsibility for shaping the direction of our Association and the real estate industry as a whole. We are career-minded real estate professionals who want to stay abreast of the latest tools and resources. Our values are leadership, involvement, advocacy, and professionalism.

Most importantly, YPN is for REALTORS® of all ages. You don’t necessarily need to be young to be involved in YPN. We have no age limit. YPN is a state of mind, we encourage REALTORS® of all ages to participate to share ideas and learn more about technology and cutting-edge innovations. The young professionals have a lot to gain from our seasoned agents in the field. Furthermore, the seasoned agents can gain valuable insight from the younger generation of high-tech agents as well -- this combination is a win-win for everyone.

New to the industry? Then YPN is for you. YPN can help you sharpen your skills and heighten your leadership potential and connection with fellow REALTORS®. The keys to the success of YPN include leadership, service, participation, innovation, and enthusiasm. Every YPN member adds value to the group. As we build a new, diverse generation of leaders, we also strengthen the affinity for the REALTOR® brand and, at the same time, gain a valuable perspective on generational shifts.

Perhaps the best part of YPN is how much fun it is. It’s a blast. YPN events are a fun way for members to meet other real estate professionals, build a referral network, and learn about career resources available. At YPN, you’re free to share ideas, contacts, information and resources with tons of interesting people. The prospects that inspire are boundless, and it generally doesn’t cost much more than a conversation.

I would like to encourage you to get involved in YPN today. It all begins with you. Don’t expect somebody to do this for you. If you don’t do this for yourself, it’s not going to happen. Remember, some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, but others make it happen. Individual commitment to a group effort is what makes teamwork a success, which leads to achievement and success for everyone.

Also, I would like to ask you to consider involvement through sponsorship. Our sponsors are the backbone of YPN. We appreciate our sponsors and are grateful for their role as accountability partners. They provide valuable feedback and help keep us succeeding at a high level. Sponsors can not only network with some real movers and shakers in the Association, plus they help us raise money and awareness for various local charities.

We have several upcoming activities. Just around the corner is “YPN Night at the Padres” on Thursday, May 10. First pitch against the St. Louis Cardinals is 7:10 p.m. at Petco Park. Admission includes all-you-can-eat buffalo wings, hot dogs, salad, water, and soda. Free beer ends in the 7th inning. Seats are located in “The Landing,” a private event area. Giveaway item for this game is a Tony Gwynn commemorative bobblehead.

Also, every month we host “Wake-Up YPN,” a morning coffee networking social. These events are typically held on the last Friday morning of the month.

Also, later this summer, YPN will be involved in supporting the second annual PSAR Realtor Games. The Realtor Games will feature teams of PSAR members competing in mental and physical challenges. The competition will include such agility activities as a sack race, free-throw contest, balloon catch, Jenga, and cornhole, as well as mental games, including a spelling bee, board puzzle and Realtor Feud, a game resembling TV’s “Family Feud.” Proceeds will benefit various charities. Last year, $7,500 was raised for three charities, including Unity 4 Orphans, South Bay Community Services, and HomeAid San Diego.

If you have any questions about YPN, don’t hesitate to call me at (619) 933-3659 or (619) 303-8702. And be sure to follow us on Facebook, We look forward to your involvement.
