You might know PSAR affiliate member Susan Carroll as the recent recipient of PSAR’s South County 2016 Affiliate of the Year award and an active member of PSAR’s Young Professionals Network (YPN) group. In addition, she regularly attends South County’s Rally & Ride Too pitch sessions on Wednesday mornings, and she is a frequent participant at PSAR events, as well as a supporter of many fundraisers organized by individual PSAR members.

But did you know that her dream job growing up was to work as a spy for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency?

Susan was raised in a military family and lived in 15 different homes before she graduated from Hilltop High School in Chula Vista. “Growing up in a military family was an exceptional experience,” Susan said. “It helped me learn how to make new friends, how to assimilate, improve my communication skills and get used to change.”

After graduating from Hilltop High, Susan attended the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virgina. She earned a bachelor’s degree in International Affairs. After graduating, she got a job interview at the CIA headquarters in Fairfax, Virgina. “No, I didn’t get the job,” said Susan. “I completely flubbed the interview.”

So, she returned to San Diego and continued a relationship with a surfer she met her senior year in high school. John Carroll, also a recipient of the PSAR’s Affiliate of the Year Award (2013), and Susan were married in 1992. They will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in May of next year.

Susan worked for nearly 10 years in corporate human resources roles in the higher education and biotech industries before their twins were born. She also worked as a REALTOR® with McMillin Realty for nine years.  John Jr. (aka J.J.) and Katherine (aka “Katie”), now age 16, are involved in water polo and lacrosse. “It’s fun watching them grow up and form their opinions about the world,” Susan said. “They both have their driver’s license and we love the good-student discount on our car insurance bill. We’re now thinking more about college and future chapters in their lives.”

Both John and Susan work in the title insurance industry for Fidelity National Title. “We really enjoy assisting our REALTOR® clients as strategic business partners, helping them save time and money and build and more business.”

In her spare time, Susan enjoys cooking special dishes with fish caught by John. Her signature dish is grilled tuna with wasabi lime butter sauce.

“PSAR is such an amazing organization because our members come together for all the right reasons, to help each other and improve the real estate industry,” said Susan. “It’s so enjoyable to network with like-minded professionals.”
