National City Mayor Ron Morrison recently met with members of PSAR’s South County Government Affairs Committee.
Morrison has served as mayor since 2006, after serving for 14 years as a councilmember. He briefed PSAR members on recent developments happening in his city, including the success of the Plaza Bonita mall expansion and the city’s attractive one-cent sales tax, which Morrison said has resulted in additional consumer spending. The mayor also discussed the recent completion of infrastructure projects on Fourth Street, Coolidge Avenue and D Avenue, as well as the current work underway on a two-mile stretch of Eighth Street from Interstate 5 to Palm Avenue.Under Morrison’s leadership, National City (population: 60,000) has been ranked as number one out of 18 cities in San Diego County for having the most affordable housing. He said two-thirds of the residential units in the city are rentals.
Morrison said his goal is to give National City long-term fiscal sustainability, promote economic growth and work with city, regional and state officials in sustaining National City’s affordable housing market.
