By 2017 PSAR President Sarah Heck

It has been my honor and privilege to serve as your PSAR President in 2017. Thank you for trusting me to guide our Association through another successful term. We had an incredible year and it would not have been possible without the help of the PSAR staff, the volunteer leaders, affiliates and all the members who participated.

As my time as President comes to an end, I want to take this opportunity to encourage you to stay involved and to invite you to step up as a leader for our Association in 2018. One of the most important and most difficult jobs a leader has is finding future leaders to replace them. Everyone who has been president in the past got there because someone invited them to step up. So, I’m inviting you to step up. Get involved. Find a committee or a task force that speaks to your heart and be part of the progress. Help find solutions. Your personal participation in PSAR makes a tremendous difference in our industry’s success.

Leadership is a rewarding way to give back to an industry that gives us so much. The benefits of getting involved in PSAR are numerous. As I discovered first hand during my last nine years of involvement with PSAR, you can receive much more than you give when you commit to volunteer. It is truly a “givers gain” reality.

A recent survey conducted by Inman Group revealed that many REALTORS® were unaware of the services offered by their Association because they were not involved. These same respondents who said they saw “no value” in their Association, also sparsely attended Association events. You won’t maximize your membership experience unless you get involved. Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Don’t be a “MINO,” member in name only.

Let me assure you, there is so much more to our Association than the MLS, lockboxes and an invoice. Here are just a few of the many behind-the-scenes benefits of PSAR:

  • Political advocacy on behalf of members and homeowners. This past year we fought to extend the flood insurance program and preserve our independent contractor status. Also, currently, there is a huge mobilization effort to protect the mortgage interest deduction.
  • Community involvement. In 2017, more than $20,000 was raised and given to different charitable organizations to help enhance our neighborhoods.
  • Ethics support and enforcement. Self-policing is one of our industry’s biggest challenges. Members of PSAR hold themselves and their peers to a higher standard. We know that in order for the REALTOR® to remain an authority in the industry, we must raise the bar and show consumers our value.
  • Training and education. PSAR provides a place for its members to learn about MLS training, standard forms updates, economic forecasts, legal protections and much more.
  • Networking. PSAR strives to help members grow their sphere of influence by hosting many networking events throughout the county. Increase your business by taking advantage of these opportunities that allow our members to get to know other REALTORS, affiliates, and community members.

If you want to affect change, influence public policy and private property rights, express your opinion, build relationships with REALTORS® across the county, plus gain knowledge and insights about the industry you represent, then getting involved in PSAR is the best thing you can do. Believe in something bigger than yourself. Together we can make a difference.

No matter what stage of your career, PSAR has a place for you to get involved. Become an even stronger advocate for your clients and their property rights. Most assuredly, I now understand things about our industry that I could never have comprehended before I got involved. I got involved for the same reason many others do -- I wanted to affect change. I will continue to stay involved because I have now seen firsthand that together we can make change happen!

In closing this farewell message, I want to say again that it has been a pleasure to have served. It was gratifying to serve with such outstanding board members. I am grateful for our incredible Association staff led by Rich D’Ascoli, our CEO (the staff are the ultimate multi-taskers). I am appreciative of the many members throughout the year who graciously volunteered their time and provided their insights, expertise, and knowledge at our various events, classes and workshops that made our industry better than before. I look forward to staying involved and supporting the 2018 leadership team. Let’s resolve in the New Year to be even stronger than before.
